South West Hound Club Open Show 2015 Critique

Thank you very much for the invitation to judge at this show. The atmosphere at the show was great which made for an enjoyable day.

JUNIOR (3/3)

1 SORIMSWAY VALIANT HERO. 6 month old dog. Lovely chunky and happy puppy coping easily in this indoor venue. Nice balance and length of body with good bone. Lovely dark eye, scissor bite and small well folded ears. Had an excellent straight front and compact and well knuckled feet. Decent depth of chest for age with well sprung ribs and a good length of ribcage. Good width across hips. Would prefer slightly more bend of stifle but had a good fallaway. Movement was very easy and true – a pleasure to watch. When it came to the final line up I awarded this young dog the RBOB as he had one of the best straight fronts on the day and good movement. BP.

2 SORIMSWAY FIELD OF POPPIES. 6 month old bitch. Litter sister to 1. Lovely sweet feminine head with a dark eye and small well folded ears. Good straight front with again good tight feet. Nice depth of chest but was slightly shorter in the loin than 1 and her rear didn’t quite have the same strength/straightness at the hocks as her brother, but she was another lovely puppy. This class was super to judge with all puppies showing promise.

POST GRADUATE (5/1)

1 GREYFLAX MY GIRL. 2 year old bitch. Balanced outline with a good light grey coat. Very well presented and shown. Lovely feminine expression with a good dark eye and correct bite. Ears could have a little more fold but didn’t detract from a lovely head overall.  Needed a little more front angulation but had a good depth of chest with well sprung ribs. Loin was strong with the correct rise leading to a good fallaway. Unfortunately, she was not striding out well at this venue and her rear movement was a little close.

LIMIT (4/2)

1 ARDLANCIEN ERISKAY. 2 year old bitch. Difficult to split 1 and 2. The winner had the more free and easy movement on the day and longer body length. She had a nice dark eye with small eyes. Coat was harsh and correct but would have benefitted from a little more grooming. Lovely width in front with good bone. Good front pastern slope. Nice depth of chest with a good underline. Good fallaway and rear angulation.

2 LUCKHURST NAIRN. 2 year old dog. Eye catching dog with good bone and correct coat. Very nice head with a dark eye and small well folded ears. Good fallaway and good bend of stifle. Just lost out today as movement was close behind and he was not striding out as well in this indoor venue.

OPEN DOG (3/3 – one withdrew)

1 HYNDSIGHT TEMPEST. 4 year old dog. Mature, well boned and balanced dog in full coat and good condition. Lovely masculine head with a dark eye and small ears. Good long neck leading to well laid back shoulders. Better width in front than 2 with sufficient front pastern slope. Decent depth in chest with good length to ribbing. Good topline with strength and length to loin. Good bend in stifle with good feet. In the final line up stood out in terms of balance and angulation. BOB.

2 GREYFLAX STANDISH. 3 year old dog. Nice light grey dog but didn’t quite have the balance of 1. Good head with a dark eye and small ears. Good bone and feet with a good depth of chest. Pacing at times but could move freely. Would prefer the dog to carry a little less weight but was in good condition overall.

OPEN BITCH (4/3)

1 KILBOURNE LEVANTO WITH HYNDSIGHT. 8 ½ year old bitch. I did like this bitch who was in good condition for age. She had a lovely dark coat and feminine head with small ears and dark eye.  She had good front feet and had the best front angulation and straightest front in the class. Would have preferred more front pastern slope. She struggled a little with the floor but I saw enough of her movement at the start which was free and easy with her top line held well. Won BOS due to her better angulation, especially her bend of stifle, and low hocks.

2 CASSACRE AELFRIDA OF GHILTAN. 5 year old bitch. Strong well made bitch. Lovely feminine head with dark eye and small ears. Good harsh coat. Would have preferred a straighter font with more front pastern slope. But she had a good bend of stifle with a lovely depth of chest. In excellent condition.
